• In 1864, Shimla was announced as the Summer Capital of the British.
• After India gained independence, the town was declared the capital of Punjab. It later changed to be the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
• During the agi? century, Shimla was a dense forest with Jnakoo temple and a mal civilization.
• It was later called Shimla, named after the Goddess Shyamala Devi, aka Maa Kaali.
• In 1832, Shimla had its foremost political meeting under colonial rule. It was a meeting of the Governor-General Lord William and the representatives of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Geographically, Shimla lies at 30° 6' North latitude and 77° 11' East longitude, and its mean elevation is 2397.59m above msl. The existing town resembles an irregular crescent with an 9.2 km extension from one end to the other, covering a total area of 19.55 sq.km.

The average temperature during summer is between 16 and 25 °C (61 and 77 °F), and between 3 and 11 °C (37 and 52 °F) in winter. Monthly precipitation varies between 13.6 millimetres (0.54 in) in November and 350 millimetres (14 in) in August.
